Preparing for your Session

We want you to look your best.  The objective of a good headshot is to look like YOU on your very best day. Headshots are not “glamour shots”, so you do not need to be overly made-up.

Here are our tips for a great shoot:

Preparation Timeline
1-2 Weeks prior to your shoot:
Get a hair cut and/or color if needed. This will help you avoid any last minute mishaps, and give your hair time to grow out a bit so it looks natural.

2-4 Days prior to your shoot:
Groom eyebrows! Yes, this is for MEN as well. Your eyes should be the focal point of any good headshot. Go to a professional if you are unsure. Trust us, groomed eyebrows make a huge difference!

Day/Night before your shoot:
Pick out clothing options, iron and hang for your shoot the next day. Avoid alcohol and get a good night’s rest. No one wants red or puffy eyes in their headshot!

Bring several clothing choices (think mostly solid colors that compliment your skin tone, including black).

Different color, fabric and neckline options are great, but try to avoid anything overly busy with stripes or bold patterns. Also, fitted tops work better. Avoid loose fitting clothing.

Bring one well-fitting, comfortable pair of pants or nice jeans (no holes).

Iron or steam shirts or blouses before your shoot and bring them on hangers so they remain looking crisp.

Women, please remember to bring bras in both beige (skin colored) and black to wear under your clothing choices, as well as a strapless bra if necessary.

Men, if possible, bring a nice, fitted white crew neck t-shirt for layering under collared shirts and sweaters.

Makeup and Hair
Think soft and natural.  Neutral palettes work best.  Avoid bright colors on eyes, lips and cheeks.  Remember to bring your own makeup with you to the shoot for touchups. Come to the shoot with your hair done, but bring brushes, curling irons, straightening irons, or whatever you usually work with to the shoot for touchups. Remember to remove chipped nail polish and/or very dark polish of any color!
